Rhythmic accompaniment of the song: students in 4 groups, they sing all together, but each group accompanies the song with different rhythmic pattern.
Develop awareness of the 4/4 meter and analysis of the song’s rhythmic development.
Web search, gathering and presentation of old photos picturing children singing carols. Discussion and remarks on the custom of the carols. Personal experience of the students from the singing of carols in neighborhoods.
Research by the students for the origins of the word “kalanta” (Latin word “calendae” and Greek word “kalo"= call). Presentation of Nikiforos Lytra’s painting “Kalanta” (1872). Observation of the elements of the painting: space, time, faces of the children, clothes of the children, musical instruments, objects, etc. Comparison of the paining to a corresponding image of the present day.
Painting upon this theme: “The New Year’s carols” (group work).
Musical compositions by the children upon given phrases of the song (f.i. Saint Vassilios is coming).
